Abstract

This study aims to explore the lexical descriptors of personality in Galician, using an emic approach, in which speakers themselves provide terms based on their own linguistic context. The Big Five Personality Model serves as the theoretical framework by proposing five fundamental aspects: extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness to experience (Goldberg 1981).

A lexical availability study was conducted in order to identify the most frequently evoked adjectives by Galician speakers when describing personality traits. An analysis was performed on the affective valence and arousal levels of the descriptors, which were categorized according to the Big Five Model. In order to examine the frequency of the terms in written language use, the Tesouro Informatizado da Lingua Galega [Galician Language Electronic Database] (TILG) corpus was consulted. The results display a predominance of terms with positive valence, consistent with previous studies in other Romance languages. Classification according to the Big Five shows a greater representation of the dimensions of extraversion and agreeableness.

This research constitutes a initial empirical approach to personality-related lexicon in the Galician language, and highlights the need to develop specific resources adapted to the linguistic reality of Galicia.
