When in 1950 Castelao died in exile in Buenos Aires, his writings and his drawings were prohibited in Spain and could only be found scattered all around the world. He was only remembered and honoured among the Galician communities living abroad in exile and in migration: Buenos Aires, México, New York, Paris... These communities published Castelao’s writings and wrote about him. They also exhibited his artistic work and produced poems, music and images of Castelao which perpetuated his fame.
In Galicia only a part of his work was slowly recovered and showed to the public. Thanks to his frequent travels to America, Valentín Paz-Andrade, who knew Castelao well, had access to a share of his work and to the collective memory kept among the Galician communities abroad. It was with the aid of these documents helped by his own memories that Paz-Andrade wrote the first full biography of Castelao, which was published in Galicia in 1982.
